Pinball History And Emulation Of Classic Tables
by Videogame Content on Aug.16, 2009, under Game Reviews
The history of Pinball dates many years back. The first tables appeared long before we saw video games at the local arcades.
The Pinball’s where a fun and challenging way to test our skills. The highlights in game might be beating the highscore or getting multiballs. On tables from 1970’s the goal was often to score replays. This could be achieved by getting items lit on the table, like a series of letters and targets.
The very first Pinball’s dating back in 1850 did not have flippers and neither where electrically powered. On these tables from 1800’s a player would shoot balls up a ramp and on the playfield where pockets where the ball would drop in and award you a score. All this changed in the late 1930’s as the first tables with electricity became available but it wasn’t until 1947 that the first table with flippers saw its light of day. Now a player had more influence and interaction with a table and gameplay because of the flippers.
The older Pinball’s where often quite hard to master but for 1 credit you got 5 balls, where as more recent tables you only get 3 balls.
With the growing interest, it went quick as manufacturers exploring new ideas, such as extra balls, multiballs and bumpers. A lot of these features we still experience on current Pinball machines. Still the Pinball’s are not as popular now, compared to the golden years.
A positive thing is we can simulate the large variety of Pinball games on PC’s, including the old classics. Visual Pinball is free and people recreate or even share their own original tables which are available to find on the www.
You could also try to make your own Pinball game with Visual Pinball as original tables where as recreations are conversions from real machines. Its user interface makes it easy to customize layouts and include any elements you want on your table, making the table is the more simple task. You can create the graphics in your favorite image editing program and import them in VP. Sounds are also ready to import.
As for the technical side like a scoring system, this will have to be programmed. To get an idea of the programming scripts, looking at the code from other tables can be a good idea.
The table, Irina Pinball is a VPin Table made with Visual Pinball. Irina Pinball tries to mix in elements from new and old Pinball tables. As all Pinball tables have a topic. Irina Pinball is a tribute to a Russian figure skater.
For this reason most the music in game are tunes of classical music. The main challenge in this table is to get the highscore. All in all a friendly pinball table suitable for all ages.
