X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE
by admin on Jun.12, 2009, under Game Reviews
Oh shucks here we go again another awful game based on a movie. They always release them close to each other. The jokes are ready, we’ve already braced ourselves for the disappointment. The legacy of Wolverine based games is not good at all. But, this one is different. It definitely takes the cake and shoves it somewhere not so appetizing. X-Men Origins: Wolverine is a very good game. Right down to Wolverine’s adamantium spine. It loosely follows the storyline of the movie in the fact that it takes key events and mixes them up with an original story. You are dealing with flashbacks for the first part of the story mainly and throughout the game actually.
All of the past Wolverine games and X-Men games that have been released have been pretty lacking in the gore department. WTF! This is one of the most graphically violent games I’ve ever seen. This is truly the vision of Wolverine that everyone had in their heads, but never did anything with it. Thank you Activision and Raven Software for opening our eyes. I mean the opening cinematic prepares you for what is to come. Claws through the head, impalements, skewering, helicopter blade decapitations, kill someone with their own weapon, it’s all there. It’s ridiculous. Ridiculously awesome.

Controlling Wolverine is straightforward. You have light and heavy attacks. The game has combos that you can pull off, but you can pretty much get away with mixing up the light and heavy buttons and make it through the entire game without knowing a single combo. The game also has a lunge function that allows you to leap long distances in order to close distance on your targets. Another awesome feature is the fact that when Wolverine becomes damaged overtime you can see all of his adamantium exposed right down to the bone. Sometimes you can see straight through him. On top of that, Wolverine heals in real time and you can sit there and watch him regenerate. Wolverine’s foes aren’t exempt from this cool little detail one bit. Also, something that I think is very cool is the quick kill feature that lets you grapple an enemy and finish him off in a gory fashion. Such as, ripping him in two, ripping his skull out, hoisting him and stabbing at him in the air, and all sorts of other things.
There is not much stealth associated with this game. It’s mainly about all out brawling. Does that sound repetitive to you? Well it is, but this is fun because you can kill enemies different ways everytime. It doesn’t really have any replay value except to unlock all of the various upgrades Wolverine can acquire throughout the course of the game. You can play it until the wheels fall off and you probably will. Story is not worthwhile just watch the movie, gameplay is repetetive but loads of fun, customize Wolverine to be the ultimate killing machine. Yeah this game is good.
